On Friday I found out that some time last week the last member of my flock passed away. I was surprised that Tino out lasted Zumi, since I'm sure she had an internal tumor or something similar going on. We for quite sometime thought it was just an egg that she was refusing to lay. However after a couple months it became fairly obvious that it wasn't as simple as that. Sadly in the area I live in there just is not that many medical options for birds, especially small birds.

Even with her internal 'egg' issue Tino never showed any signs of suffering or general discomfort other than having a waddle to her step. She had a healthy appetite , loved playing with her toys, and most of all spent much of her time trying her skills at nest building. I only hope that she didn't suffer in her final moments. She lived a happy life and never had to experience living in a pet shop.

In a way the flock isn't all gone, Dawson, Tino's father is still alive and quite healthy. I had given him to my grandmother a few years back after the death of his mate Eva. However he is rather lonely now without loud mouth Tegi, Goofy Zumi, and Vicious Tino who were all staying at grandma's house with him. I know its wrong to play favorites but Tino and Zumi each held a special place in my heart. Each had their own distinct personality and set of habits that really made them stick out from the others.

At this point in time I don't plan to get another bird, it would be wrong. I work 40+ hours a week and live alone with my cat. I wouldn't be able to give a bird the amount of attention it both needs and deserves. But sometime in the future I will assemble another flock, hopefully with one or two rescue cases included.
